Overview:
Sex Bob-Omb is a popular fictional band in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Franchise. After watching the movie and familarizing myself with the comics I wanted to redesign their brand identity into something which fits the aesthetic of their music and energy. This is a project I diecide to do for my Senior Capstone graphic design class for my senior year at Queens College.
Sexbob Omb Concept:
I’m rebranding Sexbob Omb with a indie, playful but energetic tone while making it feel very personal and “DIY” influenced since the band is more underground and started in one of the member’s garage. Im going to keep this consistent with thier logo, album cover and tour posters.
Moodboard and First Logo Drafts
To start the logo redesign, I decided to go with custom hand drawn typography. This really personalizes the logo and makes it unique rather than using an existing typeface. I was really inspired by cartoon show logos since they’re very expressive and capture a playful quality to them, which aligns heavily with the band.
Aftering curating a moodboard I started sketching a few variations of the logo. These three were later refined and after getting feedback from my classmates I decided to go with the top left one for its clear readability and energetic energy. It felt most appropriate for the band.
Logo Experimentation
I experimented with the spelling of Sex Bob-Omb here realizing that the band originally spells it “Bob-Omb” instead of “Bob-Bomb.“ After adjusting the design to this realization I worked on a few color variations. I wanted a bright eye-catching color combination with high contrast. I based the colors off Ramona Flowers’ (a character related to the band) various hair colors in the Netflix show Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Additionally, I added a tiny explosion shape in the negative space in the letter “M” and made the explosion impact lines more prominent to give the logo an energetic explosive feel. From these small additions you can get a better feel of their indie rock music.
Final Logo Showcase
The final logo have this juvenile fun yet explosive feel. It really embodies the indie rock genre for the band.
Sex Bob-Omb Album Cover
Following the aesthetic of the logo, I wanted their album design titled, Ramona, to carry the playful and energetic aestheic. I went for an illustrated cover which compliments the logo well. I knew I wanted to illustrate a bomb to give their design a mascot which the original design already uses but I modernized it to fit with the aesthetic. I then illustrated a bunch of easter eggs which reference the movie, graphic novel and tv show as well as some of my own doodles to give the viewer a lot to look over.
The back cover design is very minimalistic and typograpghy based to contrast from the overcrowded front cover. The tracklist is also full of easter eggs from actual songs from the movie and tv show to ones referenced a few times in the comics.
Album Cover CD Mockups
I feel like a CD cover encapsulates the nostalgic and “DIY” vibe that the band embodies. So I found some fitting mockups for their album cover designs. It could be fun for the fans to interact with the cover by coloring it in and posting it on social media making it into a trend, helping the marketing of the band’s success and making it stand out.
Sex Bob-Omb Tour Poster Design
I carried over the same elements I created for the album cover to create a few inital poster designs. I ended up going with the third one and refining it much more in the final deliverable. I believe this poster design is really eyecatching at its large scale and also worthy enough to be hung up in the rooms of their fans.
